WASHINGTON: Martha, the last specimen of the passenger pigeon. The pigeon, once the most plentiful bird on the planet, went extinct in Sept 1914 when Martha died at the Cincinnati zoo. Martha, which became a part of local folklore as the last surviving passenger pigeon, is being taken out of the file cabinets of history in a Smithsonian Institution exhibit this month, reminding the public of her death and what man did a century ago. Geneticists are now working on a long-shot hope of reviving the passenger pigeon from leftover DNA in stuffed birds.
