Result of Violent Clash between Local People
As a result of violent clash between local people (Bengalis) and Urdu speaking Biharis (stranded Pakistanis) broke out in Dhaka. The clash started over explosion of firecrackers on the occasion of religious festival Shab-e-Baraat.
Ten people killed in the riots. Kamal Hussain, Assistant Commissioner Mir Pur Dhaka told a news agency that there had been a tension in the environment for many days, but on Saturday morning the situation became tenser.
A leader of Biharis, Muhammad Shah Jehan, has said that about 500 Bengalis holding knives, sharp-edged weapons and sticks closed four or five houses from outside. Then, they set the houses on fire.
It is pertinent to mention here that there are about 300,000 Biharis in Bangladesh. Over forty years have been passed yet these stranded Pakistanis are granted citizenship neither from Pakistan nor from Bangladesh.
