Qandeel Baloch along with these 6 Pak celebs KILLED
A rebel by heart, Qandeel Baloch, was the face of woman empowerment in Pakistan. She was often described as Pakistan’s Kim Kardashian. In a recent interview, she spoke about how she wanted to change Pakistan’s male-dominated patriarchal society and its on-going social norms. What happened next? You know it and everyone else too. This incident has once again put the spotlight back on the deadly menace affecting the Pakistani society – ‘honour killing’. It has showed the true face of chauvinistic and atrocious world we are a part of. According to a report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, on an average, 1,000 women are killed each year for violating the family’s reputation and the conservative norms of the society.
The case of Qandeel Baloch has evoked memories from the past of many Pakistani celebrities who received flak, threat calls and even fatwas for being glamorous, and for posting provocative videos and pictures on the social media. Here’s a list of these Pakistani actresses and social icons who were fortunate to survive unlike Baloch.
1. Nargis Fakhri
Half-Pakistani and half-Czech actress Nargis Fakhri‘s Mobilink ad, featured on the front page of Jang, a widely circulated Urdu newspaper in Pakistan, created a furore over social media. In the advert, Nargis is simply lying flat on her stomach, holding the phone in one hand. Mobilink, Nargis and the newspaper were criticized for obscenity and objectifying women.
2. Veena Malik
Controversy’s favourite Veena Malik and her bold avatar has been in the news several times. From her semi-nude photoshoots, to lewd item songs, to intimately cozying up with Ashmit Patel in the reality series Bigg Boss, she is forever found stuck in unnecessary controversy. For these reasons, she was even threatened with dire consequences by the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
3. Arshi Khan
A Pakistani model who claimed to have had sex with cricketer Shahid Afridi, and even said that she was pregnant. Later, she confirmed that it was only a ‘false alarm’. A fatwa was issued against her and she even received threat calls from Pakistan.
Pakistani actress Meera starred opposite Ashmit Patel in a Mahesh Bhatt’s production, Nazar. This created unnecessary controversy over a kissing scene in the film. A fatwa was issued against her for breeching Islamic values and she also received death threats from religious organisations.
6. Humaima Malick
This Pakistan’s sweetheart, as she is widely known as, was seen locking lips with her Raja Natwarlal co-star actor Emraan Hashmi. This elicited a lot of negative reaction and she faced much flak for it.
