ECP backdrop of vote fraud allegations 2014
ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties PTI and PML-Q Wednesday jointly called for restructuring of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the backdrop of vote fraud allegations.
A PTI delegation comprising Javed Hashmi, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Jehangir Tarin met PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and discussed issues concerning electoral reforms.
Both the parties agreed to cooperate with each other on steps to introduce election reforms.
Chaudhry Shujaat was assisted by Pervaiz Elahi, Kamil Ali Agha, Mushahid Hussain, Raja Basharat and Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain.
Speaking to media after the meeting, Qureshi said that PML-Q was equally concerned about election rigging. Both parties believe that ECP failed to perform its duty of holding free and fair elections, according to Qureshi.
He said that all ECP members must step down to reconstitute the commission. “We have set up a committee to establish future contacts,” Qureshi added.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain seconded PTI’s stance saying that those ECP members who failed to hold transparent elections should resign on moral grounds.
