“I resigned as Punjab governor on my own and no one asked me to quit,” Sawar said, without giving any reason for his resignation.

Addressing a post-resignation press conference, he said that former Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah knew that he wanted to resign four months ago.

Dismissing state-run TV report claiming President Mamnoon Hussain had asked him to step down, Sarwar said neither PM House nor Aiwan-e-Sadar contacted him for issuing any directives to step down.

Chaudhry Sarwar assumed charge as Punjab Governor on August 2, 2013. He discharged his duties as governor for 18 months.

He is a former Member of the British Parliament who had been elected from Glasgow on a labor party ticket.

Sarwar gave up his British citizenship in order to become the Governor of Pakistan’s largest province.
